Long distance tickets in Germany can be bought from 29 Euros on the Deutsch Bahn website bahn.com. For travel into or from Germany we also suggest first to try bahn.com. Specials are abundant. The best time to book is 1 to 3 months in advance.
OBB NightJet trains are a good long-distance option offering seats or sleepers, using traditional international European trains. From Frankfurt, trains run south to Austria and beyond.
Rental cars
Frankfurt Airport has all the main rental brands. Four or five major brands also rent cars out from Hahn Airport. Book in advance for great deals by the week - or just pick up a car at last-minute for a 3 or 4 days weekend when you're also likely to find a good deal.
Our most recent rental was through OK-Mobility from Frankfurt Airport. We hired an Audi A1 for about 20E per day.

Air from Hahn Airport, a key Ryanair hub
Zell-Mosel is a short bus ride (#750, 35 minutes every 2 hours) from one of Europe's leading low-cost airports and a major hub for Ryanair.
Sometimes referred to as Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, Hahn is one of Germany's top-10 busiest with flights all over the Continent - but not many to points within 1000 km.
If you're looking for a flight to the Med, consider the Canary Islands, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, Majorca, Italy, Greece or Fes.
Looking east you can go to Budapest, Sofia and Croatia. We like the midnight flight to Transylvania, 3 x a week with Wizzair.
In other directions, London, Dublin, Kerry, Vilnius and Georgia.
Love them or not, Ryanair offers bargains and leaving your big luggage at Base you can travel more freely with just a cabin bag.
Frankfurt International is just over 2 hours by train. Koln-Bonn Airport is a little further. Also within reach are Luxembourg and Saarbrucken Airports.
